Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump hold high-level meeting on Tuesday
Washington: Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc pledged during a high-level meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump on Tuesday that both sides are focused on reaching a swift agreement on tariffs on steel and aluminum.
Trump publicly praised Carney and promised to leave their working meeting “very happy,” even though the prime minister made aggressive signals on trade and joked about annexing Canada.
When reporters asked Trump why he thought the Canadian trade delegation would return happy, the president refused to explain.
“Well, you’ll find out, but I think the Canadian people will love us again,” Trump said.
LeBlanc said the two sides were working to “reach a quick deal” on steel, aluminum and energy and that, privately, the talks at the White House were “more detailed” than previous discussions.
“The conversation between the two leaders filled us with the feeling that there is a desire to see how, starting with the steel and aluminum sectors, we can build a structure that serves the economic and security interests of both countries,” LeBlanc said after the meeting.
LeBlanc spoke to reporters on the terrace of the Canadian Embassy, overlooking the US Capitol building, while the Canadian flag fluttered in the wind behind him.
“These are the areas that have faced the most significant challenges from the 232 tariffs, and in today’s conversation, we talked about ways to quickly reach an agreement in these areas of critical importance.”
The entire trip was politically sensitive for Carney, who focused his election campaign on winning the trade war with Trump — a president known for abruptly criticizing world leaders in both public and private.
Carney spoke little during the press conference and did not speak publicly afterward, except for a brief post on X.
“President Trump and I know that there are areas where our nations can compete – and where we will be stronger together,” Carney posted. “We are focused on building these new opportunities.”
