Trump raises 10 percent tariff on Canada again because of an advertisement

Agency. US President Donald Trump has said he will increase tariffs on goods imported from Canada.

His decision comes after the Canadian province of Ontario ran an advertisement featuring former US President Ronald Reagan as part of an anti-tax campaign.

Posting on social media on Saturday, Trump called the ad a “hoax” and criticized Canadian officials for not removing it before the World Series baseball championship.

“Because of this misrepresentation of the facts and this hostile move, I am raising taxes in Canada by an additional 10 percent,” he wrote in his post.

The Ontario premier said he would remove the ad after Trump withdrew from trade talks with Canada on Thursday.

Canada is the only G-7 country that has not yet signed a trade agreement with the United States.

The US already imposes a 35 per cent tariff on all Canadian goods, although most goods are exempt under existing free trade agreements.

In addition, the US has imposed different tariffs on certain sectors, including a 50 percent tariff on metals and a 25 percent tariff on automobiles.

The ad, sponsored by the Ontario government, depicts former US President Ronald Reagan saying, “Taxes hurt every American.”
