Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado wins Nobel Peace Prize

Oslo. Venezuelan opposition activist Maria Corina Machado won the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee’s chairman, Jørgen Watne Friedens, praised Machado for being “a symbol of unified and courageous leadership that found common ground in a deeply divided political opposition.”

“Last year, Ms. Machado was forced into hiding. Despite serious threats to her life, she has inspired millions in her country. It is important to recognize the courageous defenders of freedom who stand up and resist when dictators seize power,” he said.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s government disqualified Machado from running in last year’s presidential election, replacing him with Edmundo Gonzalez. Previous elections have been marred by widespread repression, human rights abuses and arrests.

Protests erupted across the country after the electoral council declared Gonzalez the winner. More than 20 people died in the protests. The protests strained diplomatic relations between Venezuela and other foreign nations. Machado went into hiding during this period and has not been seen in public since January.

The Nobel Committee often awards prizes honoring the peaceful work of organizations dedicated to the maintenance of peace, the promotion of international brotherhood, and the promotion of peace.

Last year’s prize went to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese nuclear survivor who has worked for decades to maintain a moratorium on the use of nuclear weapons.

The peace prize is awarded annually in Oslo, Norway. Meanwhile, the prizes for medicine, physics, chemistry and literature have been handed out this week in Stockholm, Sweden, while the winner of the economics prize is expected to be announced on Monday.
