FIFA World Cup 2026: The World Cup trophy is set to visit Canada in April and May before the tournament begins
Agency. The World Cup trophy is coming to Canada before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The trophy will stop in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal, Halifax, Ottawa and Toronto from April 9 to May 26. The 48-team tournament, which is being jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, will run from June 11 to July 19.
The 75-stop FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour kicked off in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on January 3, with former Italian star Alessandro Del Piero arriving with the hardware.
The current World Cup trophy was first awarded in 1974, replacing the Jules Rimet Trophy.
Originally designed for the inaugural tournament in 1930, the Jules Rimet Trophy was awarded in perpetuity after Brazil won the World Cup for the third time in 1970.
FIFA then held a competition to select a new trophy, selecting Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga from 53 designs. The current trophy was first presented in 1974.
Made of solid 18-karat gold, it stands 14.5 inches tall and weighs 13.6 pounds. The 5.1-inch diameter base features two semi-precious green malachite bands that have been restored several times, with new layers of gold plating applied.
The cup holders were previously allowed to display it in their association’s trophy cabinet before returning it to FIFA for the next World Cup. But since 2006, after the most recent restoration, the original cup has only been given to the team during the official awards ceremony before being returned by FIFA.
The winning country will get to keep an exact copy of the original.
The names of the teams that have won the World Cup since 1974 are engraved on the base of the trophy.
The FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour is sponsored by Coca-Cola. Although limited, tickets are free and fans can register for it starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday by visiting www.coca-cola.com/ca/en.
