Trump announces no attack on Iran before US midterm elections
Washington. US President Donald Trump has announced that he will not attack Iran before the midterm elections on November 3. He said that productive discussions are underway with Iran and claimed that Iran is in a weak position economically and militarily.
Before Trump’s announcement, US media reported that the White House had instructed the Pentagon to plan attacks on potential Iranian military targets.
Meanwhile, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and hostilities between Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis and Saudi Arabia sent crude oil prices soaring to $105.88 per barrel.
Opinion polls show that American voters are unhappy with the rising cost of fuel after the US and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28. Trump’s claims that prices would fall after the war ends have not reassured voters. As the US midterm elections approach, Trump’s Republican Party is at risk of losing its majority in Congress. Trump has warned that he could face a third impeachment trial if Democrats gain a majority in the House of Representatives. After facing criticism for his comments that Iran might attack Los Angeles and San Diego, Trump accused the media of misinterpreting his remarks. He said that a temporary increase in gasoline prices was a small price to pay when Iran did not have nuclear weapons.
