US President Trump ‘flexible’ to lift sanctions on Iran
Agency. US President Donald Trump has said he is open to discussing tough US sanctions on Iran, which Tehran has repeatedly demanded be lifted.
“Frankly, Iran is asking if the sanctions can be lifted,” President Trump said during a dinner with Central Asian leaders. “They’ve been under very tough US sanctions, which have made their situation really difficult. I’m open to hearing that and we’ll see what happens, but I’m willing to discuss it.”
The United States and Western countries have long accused Iran of trying to acquire nuclear weapons, but Iran has insisted its nuclear program is for entirely peaceful purposes.
Iran has been under international sanctions for years after the US withdrew from the then-international nuclear deal in 2018 and reimposed harsh economic sanctions.
The war erupted in mid-June this year after Israel launched an unprecedented air campaign against Iran. During the offensive, the United States also briefly participated in attacks on Iranian nuclear sites on Israel’s side.
Iran responded to Israeli bombing with missiles and drones during the 12-day war, which led to the suspension of nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington that began in April.
President Trump said Iran was once a “rogue” nation in the Middle East, but now it has lost its nuclear weapons capability. Since taking office for his second term in January, he has repeatedly claimed that the recent attack has completely destroyed Iran’s nuclear program. However, the true extent of the damage is still unclear.
Last September, the United Nations, at the initiative of Britain, France and Germany, reimposed old sanctions against Tehran through a “snapback” mechanism. The sanctions have blocked all economic transactions related to Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile activities.
Oman, which has facilitated several rounds of US-Iran nuclear talks, has again urged both sides to return to talks. The aim of the talks is to forge a new deal under which Iran would receive some relief from sanctions in exchange for limiting its nuclear activities.
President Trump has said, “If Iran chooses a peaceful path, the door to cooperation in the future will remain open.”
