US Supreme Court ruling: TikTok to be shut down from Sunday

Toronto. Video-sharing platform TikTok said it will be forced to shut down its services in the US starting Sunday unless the government intervenes before the ban takes effect.

In a statement late Friday, it said the White House and the Justice Department “failed to provide necessary clarity and assurance to service providers who are integral to maintaining TikTok’s availability.”

Unless the government intervenes quickly to assure the video app that it will not be punished for violating the impending ban, it will be “forced to go dark on January 19,” it said.

The statement comes after a Supreme Court ruling on Friday that upheld a law that would have banned the app in the US if China-based parent company ByteDance had not sold the platform by Sunday.

The law, passed in April last year, states that ByteDance must sell the US version of the platform to a neutral party to avoid a full ban.

But TikTok has filed a legal challenge, arguing that it violates freedom of expression protections for the country’s 170 million users.

The US Supreme Court ruling means the US version of the app will be removed from the App Store and web hosting services until a buyer is found in the coming days.

Previously, it was thought that TikTok would not be affected by the ban for those who had already downloaded the app to their phones. But since updates will not be available after the ban is implemented, the app will eventually degrade and become unusable over time.
